So,since always some people wondered why I love Frapp...why I defend 'em?,ok HERE THE ANSWER
First...let's a see this escenario,you remember "The Devil's Hands are Idol Playthings" ?well we can see Fry failing in his attempt for win Leela's heart.But when she said no (like "That was so sweet but...-insert an excuse here-" insecure let's a say better),that destroyed Fry,alone and sad in a place of teather...when suddenly we see Zapp in another place(where the important people see ,I dont remember the name) he saw everything and comforts Fry...pretty...right?

Why help him?..well they can feel the same pain of being rejected from the same girl,so is a good chance to help each other,and also Fry could use Zapp for make Leela jealousy :/ like revenge..but with the time he starts to know better to Zapp...so his feelings can change,more than friends and starting to doubt if really Fry wants Leela,and those stuff.

Well that was the first thing what came to my mind...but let's a see in other way(more than "who needs Leela when we can have each other?"),is...Zapp isn't the happiest person ever,I can see always annoyed and grumpy and besides to his "Oh I am the best B)" actitude I can justify that :/..he is rich...right? or well at least he have money...maybe his childhood(Note: IS ONLY MY OPINION ._....I really want an episode about Zapp's past or something 9_9) he was rejected from his parents(you know that people who always think in money or are always busy) and see those mean actitudes (not only servants ,people in general) really affected him,thinking what that is normal :/.Also...he isn't very smart..maybe he wasn't the best student...and also he isn't a very healthy or...ok he is kinda fat ¬.¬ so...yes bullying,that could affect him and also the fact the girls rejected him...that could make him wanting be better D: and show everyone he isn't weak . So for fate things he joined to DOOP...and started to work for be what he is now.

Then..why he isn't happy at all..well the people respects him ,not loves him,Kiff well..he hates Zapp( Español: Lo ayuda de mala gana xD)...so who is better than Fry?..Fry is always(or almost always) Happy or with a smile in his face...so he could see that Zapp isn't evil...only a stupid who wants attention.
And also...in my humble opinion...Zapp would treat better Fry than Leela(ok I'm back at first,but is true :/) not only in love-asspect...Zapp could see Fry how was he when he was young (in fact he says that in an episode about "You reminds to myself when I was young" in the titanic episode,not the same words because I dont saw the serie in english but I'm sure that he said something like that anyways xD) so...another reason for help him to be "cool" because he wanted be cool in that time.
And yes..I think what Fry respects Zapp because he is a superior D: and could admire him...at least a bit.
Proofs in the serie?...well I saw more interaction in the comics between they,but yeah I can fill that too!
I blame spanish dub...makes Fry more gay(is the main reason why I dont like Billy West a lot =_=,dont kill me please D: ) because in the episode "Love's Labours lost in the Space"(Zapp's frist episode)...in the part where Zapp meets Leela and kisses her hand(what gentelman :'D!) Fry interrumpts the moment xD! and in the spanish dub that was the dialogue:
Fry: Oh I heard that you destroyed a lot of robots from the planet something in the galaxy something.
Zapp:Murderers Robots ? pftt silly things!..is about be more smarter.
Fry:-smiling like a moron- wow! you're more smarter than prettier o_o!

I'm sorry for my awful traduction...but the last thing is right, I TOTALLY remember it <3...see?,well after in the same episode Fry says that Zapp is an idiot..but he tolds that to Leela..maybe was only for makes her feel a bit better :/...so the first impressions are more importantly XD.
In the When Aliens Attack I noticed(well a friend noticed that) what Fry is the only who really pays attention to Zapp's stupid commands and plains xD.

Do you need anoth...I remember another episode...not only in that episode Fry follows Zapp...

Brannigan Begin Again,anyone?...do you remember it? for start Fry betrays Leela!..and..well do you remember "Hurray! for the new captain!"..and then he is underwear in front to Zapp ;D (And he isn't amazed until when Zapp mention what he can stay in underwear :9 )

and yes Fry showed his loyalty in that way (yes, counts as fanservice for me o_o)
Now...in The War is the H-word A LOT OF STUFF HAPPENS..first clearly you can notice what Zapp is bi-curious (Lee Lemon~~!)...and also he tolds Fry what he is a coward...and..I dont know,but I can see Fry trying to show to Zapp he isn't that...in an obessive way...I did mention what Fry could respect Zapp for be a superior? maybe that breaks his heart ):..and also Fry treats Zapp as "you" not like a superior.

In the movies?..well everyone knows what The Beast with billon backs is my favorite(movie and episode) because..I said that Zapp is probabilly bi...then what is Fry? I can't say what is gay either...only a guy who wants feel loved is all,becuase Yivo is he(she...but I dont believe it because his MANLY voice) that makes me think that Fry doesn't care the gender only wants some affection :'D.And also Yivo married everyone...so...Fry & Zapp were...yes married xD!..and also in Yivo's heaven everyone had orgies...so...I leave that to....

and also...in the fourth movie,I dunno if was the dub...but Zapp says sexy to Fry o_o...when Leela in the others girls captures to the guys and force 'em to dance ,Zapp sees and said "Ohh that is sexy...wait something is wrong "...ok leave my imagination

now...the comics...I saw more "action" ,I didn't read all the comics...but this is what I found time ago...
(I'm not going to tell you the plot...only the hints)
Comic #21: When they call to the DOOP,they want(I mean FORCE) Fry to help Zapp agnaist the aliens...here what used Zapp for convice Fry...
Zapp: did someone say sex?
Leela: No!
Zapp:Then I must heard my second favorite word War
Bender-starts to sing-
Zapp:What is it good for? I'm glad you asked!..if these aliens want a fight, we'll erect an offensive so fast and hard they wont even know their defenses have been penetrated until after the climax of the battle
Fry:Wait,is he talking about war or not?
Zapp: Of course-- a space you'll witness from a front roat seat! Becuase you're coming with us!

After of that Fry doesn't have another option,he is scared..and Leela is with him the whole night,but Fry is more..thinking...scared he is going to die...and with Zapp >_>,and Leela tried to kiss him but he has his doubts o_o
I dont have more...OH YES Zapp saves Fry in the comic :'D
Comic #44: LOVELOVEHATELOVEHATETHING...the comic was basically that D: Zapp is always making fun to Fry for start...in the story they make a bet in a race,the prize is Leela...of course...they are more "I AM GONNA KICK YOUR ASS D:<" ...and also they fight...let me find the page...

Also in comic #43 (Fry in Zapp's dreams) and 37 (Fry follows Zapp's useless plains again) are another examples...
Ok..after to read this(please I hope at least 1 person trying to read my weird english,I'm sorry for the mistakes) you are thinking what I am crazy..yes I am...I have a lot of free time how you can see...
but at least..being rivals is more realistic,Zapp calling "Carrot Head" or "Pumpkin Head" or "Looser" at Fry...and Fry calling him "Jerk" or "Fatass" (lol south park reference) because...again Leela :/ and fighting in front of her trying to impress...she can say something like "shut up! I dont care...both are the same annoying thing!-leaves-" and they screaming "IS NOT TRUE!" together 8D
I hope have/see more about those two in a near future,really is an interesanting pairing ): ,in the serie...actually some upcoming episodes seem be interesanting o_o I hope what I'm right about it...but also I'm talking about fanart and fanfics D:...and I thought what fandoms can think in EACH PAIRING POSSIBLE ._.

well...I can feel proud about this <3 be the first person in show some love to those two~~
